Compartmentation
Fire compartmentation means dividing a building into different areas or sectors able to provide a given level of fire resistance.
Its purpose is to limit the spread of fire and smoke from one area to another, slowing its advance and helping maintain the conditions needed for evacuation and emergency response.
However, effective compartmentation depends on every element that makes up the separation between sectors.
A fire-resistant wall can lose much of its effectiveness if cables, pipes, ducts or other services are later run through it without properly treating those penetrations.
That is why it is essential to pay special attention to every point that could break the continuity of the compartmentation.

Sealing and service penetrations
In industrial, commercial, residential and service buildings, it is common for walls and floor slabs to be crossed by numerous services: electrical cabling, cable trays, pipes, ventilation ducts and other conduits.
When these elements cross a fire-resistant separation, the penetration must be properly treated to maintain the intended performance of the compartmentation.
